Migrate S3 to Local - Managed Storage

Original Question or Issue:

How can we migrate the managed storage from S3 to Local?

Environment:

  • Product - FileCloud Server
  • Version - 23.241 and later
  • Platform - Any

Steps to Reproduce:

Managed storage configured as S3.

Error or Log Message:

FileCloud Server does not currently include a built-in tool to directly migrate managed storage from Amazon S3 to local storage. However, the migration can be accomplished using the workaround steps described below.

Defect or Enhancement Number:

 

Cause:FileCloud Server does not include a native in-place storage migration path. Migrating from Amazon S3 to local storage therefore requires provisioning a new environment and transferring data manually using the Export and Seeding tools.

 

Resolution or Workaround:

You can follow the below high level steps:

  • Setup a new environment: Direct Installation - FileCloud Docs - Server
  • Export all the user data using our export tool from the old environment: Export Files - FileCloud Docs - Server
  • Manually replicate all configuration settings from the old environment's Admin Portal to the new Admin Portal. This includes, but is not limited to: Active Directory (AD) integration, Data Loss Prevention (DLP) policies, Content Search settings, and ICAP configurations.
  • Re-import the user data using the seeding tool: Migrating Content with the Seeding Tool - FileCloud Docs - Server
  • Recreate the shares or request the users to perform the shares again.
  • After completing internal testing and validation, update your DNS records or load balancer configuration to route user traffic to the new environment.
